Stokes Red Rock Combo Bird Feeder

Review From the Bird Watchers Perspective

Appearance

This red, all metal tube bird feeder has a sleek, smooth look. It has a red metal roof and bottom and black strong mesh screens.

3-In-1 Tube Bird Feeder

My Tube Bird Feeder

This tube bird feeder does the job of three traditional bird feeders. This Stokes feeder performs like the following types of feeders:

  1. Tube bird feeders for birds who like to perch,
  2. Mesh wire bird feeders for birds that like to cling while they eat and
  3. Hopper bird feeders for larger birds who like the handy small feeder tray on bottom.

The overall shape of the feeder is a cylinder, hence it is designated as a tube bird feeder. However, it functions as all three types of feeders, making it a 3-in-1 tube bird feeder.

2 Types of Seeds in the Twin Chambers

You can offer 2 seeds simultaneously, in separate compartments, in this tube bird feeder. Each of the feeding compartments hold over a pound of bird seed. Black oil sunflower seeds are recommended for one chamber, and sunflower chips or wild bird blend for the other.

Birds Attracted

Due to the twin chambers offering different seeds, and the multiple eating surfaces, a variety of birds eat at the tube bird feeder. Cardinals, Nuthatches, Chickadees, Finches, Woodpeckers, Wrens, Buntings, Grosbeak and more are attracted to the Red Rock Twin Feeder.

Wire Mesh Screen Opening Size

Some backyard bird watchers indicate the small black oil sunflower seeds are too large for the  screen openings. My finches pull the seeds through the screen openings with a little effort, and it does not deter them.

Tray Could Be Larger

A larger tray would keep sunflower seeds from being bumped off the feeder.  I keep a seed catcher under this feeder, especially for sunflower seeds that sprout.  To be fair, I do the same for all my feeders, but this bird catcher seems to collect more seeds than average.

Filling and Cleaning

Both the top and the bottom of the Stokes Combo Tube Bird Feeder screw completely off, making it very easy to clean. In addition, it is easy to spray water through the wire mesh sides to get every nook and cranny clean.

Also, because the top screws completely off, the feeder is easy to fill. You aren’t fighting a top that is pushed to the side but still attached, like so many other bird feeders.

I purchased this tube bird feeder to replace one I threw away in frustration and disgust. I love the easy filling and cleaning of this feeder.

Rain

Bird Feeder - Squirrel-Rain Guard
Squirrel/Rain Guard

The roof overhand is not enough to keep the seed dry from rain.  I hang squirrel/rain guards over my bird feeders to protect the bird seed in the rain and squirrels.

The feeder tray has small holes to let the rain water drain. The problem is, the holes are only large enough to drain water from a fairly light rain. Again, a rain guard protects the feeder from most rain and reduces the stress on the drainage holes.

Not Squirrel Proof

This tube bird feeder is not squirrel proof. However, since it is all metal, the squirrels can’t easily destroy it like they can feeders with wood or plastic parts.

My squirrels like to lay on top and hang their heads over the side to eat through the mesh.  A squirrel baffle corrected the squirrel problem for me, and provided additional rain protection as well. Of course, motivated squirrels tend to find away to get past squirrel proofing.

Review From the Birds Perspective

Perch, Tray and Wire Mesh

A variety of birds can eat in the way natural to them with the multiple options available. They can cling to the screen, sit on a perch on the tube bird feeder, feed on the hopper style tray.

2 Types of Seed

Different birds prefer different types of bird seed. This tube bird feeder provides the small black oil sunflower seed in the shell, or the shelled sunflower hearts/chips loved by smaller song birds. Also, wild bird seed blend can be offered in the feeder.

Tray Perch Is Small

While the tray perch is small, I’ve seen Cardinals, Blue Jays and Mourning Doves on mine.  It doesn’t seem to slow them down much if there are seed on the tray. However, the holes allowing bird seed to flow from the tube bird feeder to the hopper style tray could be larger.

Wire Mesh Screen Openings

The black oil sunflower seeds are not easy to pull through the wire mesh screen openings. My birds don’t seem to care, but some bird watchers feel like it reduces the number of birds at the feeder.  The tube bird feeder is designed for the sunflower seeds to not fall through the screen when filling.
